The Writer's Palette
Writers are...
In short, AMAZING! Writing is a sound way for students to communicate thoughts, ideas, perspectives, opinions, and so much more! As readers, we learn from mentor texts and take on styles from other authors to create our own writing pieces. Students have been "trying on" different types of writing genres and strategies to hook readers already this year. If you get ahold of a piece of writing from your own young author-be sure to read it cover to cover-these kids have some amazing skills!
Personal NarrativesThese are the best stories to start the year with, since they are stories about the author's own lives, brought to life by "climbing inside" small moments!

Information TextsThe American Revolution gets the spotlight in this unit. Students select an interest topic they want to be an expert on, research, teach, and even pretend they are apart of the action in the late 1700's!

Opinion PiecesWhat 5th grader doesn't have a opinion?! Exactly! This unit is always a fun one to teach and read the published pieces, whether it's longer recess, or reasons why pizza should be served everyday!
